A.J.C. SPRING CARNIVAL

DERBY TO BALLYMENA

DAVID WINS SPRING STAKES.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. COfYHIOHI,)

SYDNEY, 29th September. The A.J.C. Spring Carnival opened at Randwick in. ideal, weather. There were eighty thousand people present. The contests generally were regarded as the most open for many years, and results bore but that prophecy. The New Zenlanders' excellent performances' to dote had earned the utmost respect for all the horses hailing from across the Tasman, but Rapine and Tarleton, on whom most trust was placed, failed to live up to expectations. Ballymena was not included in the first half-dozen possible Derby winners, bu£ he convincingly shattered the poor opinion created'by leaving . the field at the right' moment, and winning comfortably. The Hawk was/reported to have a cold, and was not so warmly regarded as an Epsom winner, but he was always kept handy to the leaders, and ultimately finished fourth. Clare/ was considered a good thing if he got away from the barrier. He succeeded "in getting away well-, and boi'e out the forecast as "a thoroughbred Would. David had Toohey as . pilot, in place of Wood, who was riding^Fred Power. Toohey kept in a handy position till the top of the straight was reached, but made his charge gallop the "remainder of the journey. Rapine, though pushed hard on the outside of the field, was Unable to gain on the leader. Toohey won the Spring Stakes on David in 1921. There were' fourteen' starters in the Trial Stakes, and twenty-six in the Epsomv " '■
