A NARROW ESCAPE

TRAIN AND MOTOR-LORRY AT A

CROSSING.

(BT TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHUKCH, This Day. The north bound train at Riccarton road crossing at 5.30 this morning struck a motor truck driven by A. H. Parish and-turned it completely round without throwing the driver out, but smashed the wheels. Parish says he was travelling at ten miles an hour. There was no crossing-keeper or signals, and he did not see the train till it was on him. He owed his escape to the fact that he accelerated instead of applying . the brakes. The driver of the train claims that he whistled. The crossing is a bad one, the scene of fatalities in the past.
