(AUSTRALIAN - NEW 7JALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.* NEW YORK, 23rd September. , The first tragic occurrence to grow out of the pressmen's strike is the death of George Davis, v/ho was fifty years old, and employed in 'the mailing room of the "New York American," and who was badly beaten by an unknowrf' assailant in a dark passageway leading from the newspaper's press rooms. The incident has stirred a great amount of popular feeling, and the newspaper has offered a 2500-dollar reward. The Police' Department, twhich has surrounded all the newspaper plants with cordons of policemen since the pressmen walked out, is making every effort to determine who was the assailant, and half the available detective force is being assigned to this duty. There have been minor incidents of violence during the past week, motorlorries carrying newspapers being upset, and volunteer pressmen beinz intimidated The strike has proved an unbelievable upset to the normal life ot the city, popular attention,being centred as never before upon the labour difficulty, and, moreover, the end is not yet evident. The pressmen to-day voted to continue the strike, despite the first reports of a settlement. Endeavours will be made to import pressmen from outside cities, but it is probable that combined limited editions of the newspapers will continue for some tune, and without advertisements
