PERSONAL MATTERS
Dr. Oswald Earp-Thomas arrived last week from New York, on a brief visit to New. Zealand.
Mr. Daniel Dee, one of Wellington's early settlers, who passed away recently at Auckland, was formerly a well known and respected resident of Thomdon, and was for many years on the staff of the Public Works Department. Mr. Dee retired on superannuation twelve years ago. He met with a tram accident about two years ago, from which he never recovered. He was a native of Ballybunion, County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New. Zealand with his five brothers, who all pre-deceased him. The late Mr. Dee is survived by a widow, one daughter (Mrs. M. Cooper), and five sons. ■ ■.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands for' Otago, Mr. R. T. Sadd; ■ who is retiring from that position at the end of ,October, is an old Nelson College boy, and served most of his time in the Kelson district, afterwards holding the commissionership at Napier prior to coming to Dunedin in March of 1914 As Mr. H. M. Skeet, of Auckland, is' also retiring, and Mr. R. P. Grenville, of North Auckland, has died, tKere will shortly be three vacant Commissionerships in the Department. • The Hon. Sir Maui Pomare (Minister of Health and Minister in Charge of the Cook Islands) will leave by the Maunganui to-morrow on a visit to the Cook Islands. H 6 will be accompanied. by Lady Pomare, Miss Pomare, Mr. J. D*. Gray (secretary of. the .Department ■of External Affairs), and Mr. J. A. Conway (private secretary). If circumstances permit, the Minister and party will remain in-the Islands until the return trip ol the Maunganui, which wil leave Rarotonga for-New Zealand lon 2nd November. During the absence of Sir Maui Pomare, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart will take over the portfolio of ■ Health, and the Hon. Sir Francis Bell will deal with Cook Inland matters.
Mr. C. N. Cotterell, manager of the c aPi CT J Jranch of the .Bank of New South Wales, who has been promoted to Christchurch, was entertained by a representative gathering of professional and commercial men on Friday, and was presented with a well-filled wallet,'in appreciation of his services and the regard in which he is held. Mr. P. Ashcroft made the presentation, and Mr J. 8.-Andrew, Mayor of Napier, expressed the hope that Mr. Cotterell would ultimately return to Napier to rejoin his many friends. In reply, Mr. Cotterell remarked that h e joined the bank in Aapier 41 yaars ago, and he felt like leaving home, and would not go if the promotion had not been so -substantial. Mr W. J. Leversedgo succeeds Mr: CV?'tterell at Napier. .
