An outspoken condemnation by Colonel Repington of the Singapore Base appears in "Blackwood's Magazine." Colonel Repington declares that the site doeg pot provide th e necessary area of wellprotected water space nor security tntj food for an industrialised population. He complain*.of the inadequate depth of water, especially in the western approaches, which are barred by sandbanks, while tile new base is outeide the existing defences, and thereby exposed to attack from the aidn of the mainland it a force landed there.
He adde: "The only thing that can be said for the site is that it is the most unsuitable imaginable. It will be a paradise only for the contractors."
