The survivors, jumping into 'the sea, Stood neck-deep' in the water, dicing, .their head's beneath the surlace occasionally to counteract the terrific heat.
The Polish Minister in Japan was flung by the earthquake into the Yokohama canal, alone both sides of which roaring flames blazed. Nevertheless, with the flames raging round him, he remained in the water 18 hours, eventually escaping alive.
