The Bradford Chamber of Commerce resolved to •recommend to the Imperial Conference the imposition by the Dorairiions of an export duty on all raw materials of which they possess a virtual monopolySir Gerald Gaunt, opposing it, said that if any Dominion adopted export tales' on its products, other nations might Be expected to retaliate with export taxes on tliei* products, srich as cottjn. Producers could only be expected to restrict their market by the adoption of export duties, if they received adequate compensation. It was. evident that the motion aimed principally at merino wool; of which Britain only consilitieA 20 per cent., the remainder going to foreign countries. The chamber adopted a resolution demanding an inquiry, milder. the AntiDumping Act,- into unemployment in Bradford. One- speaker emphasised the point that Bradford's depression was partly due to the French" exchange rate. . He suggested that, >scthe_ chamber had recently. accepted the Boubaix invitation to view tljes. devastations there, the chamber, sivould invite its .Boubaix friends'to Bradford to. see her devastated area, namely, her long queues of unemployed.
