THORNDON ESPLANADE TO GO
Authority was given the City Solicitor, Mr J. O'Shea, by the City Council last evening • to negotiate with the Railway Department and the Harbour Board with reference to compensation to the council for the land taken by .those bodies along the Thorndon Esplanade. The Mayor, Mr B. A. Wright, stated this morning that the esplanade had already been- formally taken over as being a part of the land lequired for the new railway yard and harbour-front purposes, but it was not likely that it would be devoted to such purposes for some.time to come. The Act gave those bodies the right to acquire land where it was necessary for the development of a scheme such as that proposed for Thorndon, and made provision that, the amount of compensation to be paid should be settled by arbitration.
Mrs. D. M. Graham has been elected president- of the Ladies' Committee of ,tbe Maaterton, Horticultural Society.
