TEACHERS WELCOMED
ARRIVALS FROM CANADA,
!A" pleasant social gathering took place at the Newtown School last evening, when the teaching staff and members of the School Committee formally welcomed Miss Agnew and Mrs. Takaberry, who recently arrived from Canada under the new exchange sytem for teachers, to ■take up positions at tha Newtown and Berhampore schools respectively. Mr. Salmon, chairman of the School Committee, was in the chair, and, in welcoming the visitors, referred briefly to the high standard attained by. the - Newtown School in turning out children who would be a credit to the community. The teachers were- entirely responsible for this work, and they had done their ,work well.
_ Drl .D. Catchpole welcomed the visiting teachers as an ex-Canadian. He then explained the teaching system as it applied in Canada, comparing it with that in New Zealand, which, he said, lacked only two things to make it one of the nnest systems in the world. They were proper facilities ■ lor. teaching; and the standardisation of school books • o M .v R\ M'K€en- M-P- for Wellington tsouth, a i so extended a cordial welcome to the visitors. He said that a better education would give the children' leav:ng school a wider outlook on life He hoped that by the interchange of teachers New. Zealand might learn something .which would tend to bring her standard oJ education up to that of other countries, which were obviously far m advance of her so far as facilities were concerned.
Mrs. Takaberry, in reply, outlined the teaching system of Canada, which - had proved most, efficient in turning out welleducated children..'
