WOMEN SHEEP STEALERS
COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.

BLENHEIN, This Day. Three women of Pelorus Sound, named Gampell, th» mother and two young daughters, have been committed for sentence on charges of sheep stealing and receiving; also on several charges of theft. The facts showed that the elder woman ran a small farm in the Sounds, lhe two daughters (aged 19 and 20) on several occasions rowed to neighbouring properties during nightime, and stole sheep returned home, and slaughtered and dresßed them. They were also responsible for a series of depredations on empty houses in the Sounds. The accused were arraigned on eight charges of. breaking and entering and theft, all being reduced to' common theft. The Court room resembled a second-hand shop with the display of the allegedly stolen goods. In several cases owners failed to satisfactorily indentlfy the goods. Accused wer» admitted to bail in sums of £200 and £100 in each case.
