AN EMPIRE UNITED
PROPOSAL FOR OLYMPIC GAMES.
*t is tho desire of the British Olympic Association to establish an Empire section in the'village close to the stadium where the Olympic Games are to be held, and. a request for New Zealand to join hand in hand with Great Britain was made to the New Zealand Olympic Council last evening"by -letter from the British Association. They.-.of the Mother Country, it. was stated, desired to form the closest of friendships with and see as much of the athletes of the Dominions and colonies as possible during the tune they were in Europe, and hoped they would house their men alongside: They could then,, without losing their individuality, form a,' British Empire section of the village, each Dominion with its own .flag, and one big Union Jack floating over the whole. Countries enter the stadium on opening day in alphabetical order, and Australia—in the absence of Germany (Allemagne)—-near the head of the procession, other Dominions and Great Britain scattered all along the line, with South Africa bringing up.the rear.; • ■' "If ever ' one wished to furnish a situation symbolic of an Empire being scattered and disunited, surely the order regulating, the order, of entry of. the countries at the official opening pro vided the setting.. The British Olympic Association suggested that Great Britain and Dominions and Crown Colonies should enter the procession together in alphabetical, order, or in order of seniority, each Dominion or colony with its own flag. In this way the world; which flocked to the stadium on the opening day would see the Motherland with her children solid and compact behind her, a real and living example.of an Empire united in every sense of the word."' The International Olympic Council w-juJ-i raise no objection, provided Dominions were unanimous in desiring this. The proposal :.vas strongly supported, and the letter was referred to the special committee to go into the financial aspect of tho matter:
