SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
PAY AND CLASSIFICATION.
Asked by Mr. R. M'Keen (Wellington South) in the House of Representatives yesterday, whether he will make.provision for the payment of salaries of secondary school teachers according to their classification, the Minister of Education (the Hon. C. J. Parr) replied: "In sec.ondapy schools there are'four jjades of positions, A, : B, C,. and D. There are likewise four scales of efficiency-of assistants also designated. A, B, C, and D. An A grade position must in general beheld by a Grade A teacher, and the fact that there' are few more A Grade teachers, for example, tihan there.are A positions is only in accordance with ordinary business practice to insure competition for the higher positions. A certain number of teachers in country, secondary schools hold positions above their personal grades, and these teachers receive the salary for the positions occupied, and may receive increments until the.maximum salaries of the grade are .attained.' The suggestion of the honourable member would inevitably lead to all the higher-graded teachers taking positions in city schools, and the more inexperienced and lower-grade teachers beintr the only ones available for country schools."- J
