BROWN SHIELD TEAM
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —One cannot but'sympathise with Messrs. William's, Godber, and Webster in their task in selecting a team to visit Auckland. What with injuries and sickness and players not being available, I their task is certainly not an enviable lone,' but let us analyse the-team. It [ includes four full-backs, Gibb, Taylor, I Guest, and Bell (reserve), four centrehalves, M'Girr, Kissock, Jones, and i Russell. Guest and Russell, presumi ably, are to play in the forward line. i May I ask this question : Has G. Hughes I (Hospital) been asked to go? He is i.still the cleverest centre-forward in the '•town. Then D. Ferguson, Anton, and Lothian (who has been filling that position for Scottish Wanderers) should have been consulted. Wilkins (Karori), M'EUigott (Marist), Gibson (Hospital), Hindmarsh (Y.M.), Findlay (Diamonds), Trott (Y.M.), and last, but not least, Jeffry (Institute) should have been asked. Waller, in the writer's opinion, is too nervous to make a first-class custodian, and is often very slow in clearing. What has become of Gell (South Wellington), and has Porteous offended past all redemption? For the first time for a long while, Porteous had some work to do on Saturday, and did it like an artist; anyhow, he certainly saved his side from defeat. The question is not as to whether we capture the Brown Shield. The game at present is booming- in Auckland and it is up to us to send a rattling good team to extend Auckland to the utmost and satisfy the big crowd that is likely to be there. The average selector does not seem to favour the scientific footballer, and as long as a player is a good tackier and a strong kick he is ensured a place in the representatives. —I am, etc.,
