THE MINER'S EYES
BAD LIGHT AND NYSTAGMUS.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIGHT.)

(Received 11th August, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, 10th August. The report of the Miners' Nystagmus Committee shows that there is ah apparent increase in the disease, though in most cases the men are only partially incapacitated. The sufferers benefit physically and psychologically by work, which should be encouraged as soon as possible. The report recommends that everything possible should be done to make the standard illumination by safety lamps equal to that from an open light. Tlie conclusion is reached that errors of refraction in the eye itself have no direct influence on the disease.
Miners' nystagmus is a disease apparently caused by prolonged working in a deficient light,'and resembles a condition found in albinoes. The subject has incomplete control over the muscles of the eyes, which cannot be directed properly, especially, upon near objects.
