THE POTATO POSITION.

CHRISTCHURCH, 10th August. A small scetion of the local merchants are less optimistic about the future of the potato market, but the average opinion is that the uneasiness is only temporary. Values between merchants are easier as the result of developments of the week. A few sales have taken place at £8, country stations, for whites, but^ generally little business is discussed under £8 ss. Sales have been made at £9 10s, f.0.b., s.i., for prompt delivery, but offers-of business at a lower basis for the next month have proved elusive.

_ i'he position is an extremely interesting one, and when the over-sales have to be handled later.on in the month there is likely to be some excitement. Prices may be set down at up to £7 6s per ton.

_ A fair amount of .paper business has been done in oats in the direction of covering forward sales. The business was, for the most part, determined by cancellations. The oat market is practically down and out. Few merchants are prepared to offer more than 2s 6d per bushel on trucks. "

In regard to other lines of produce things are very quiet.
