' CHICAGO, 9th August, Hawkes appeared listless at the end of the fourth set of the Davis Cup match against Shimidzu, but when the fifth started he stepped into play with vigour, and won the first game, 4-1, by placements outside the reach of the Japanese, who, upon this rare occasion, advanced to the net. The second game offered much fine volieying. both men stroking adeptly for many returns and winning points chiefly on their place-, ments. Shimidzu won the second game, 5 : 3, and Hawkes won the third game, 4-2, by several well-placed returns just within the lines. He won the fourth, 5-3. At one moment in this game it looked as if Hawkes had lost it, the umpire making a questionable decision in regard to a ball on the line, calling it out, but the linesman rectified the error. Shimidzu won the fifth game, 5-3. Hawkes now appeared to be tired, apparently not trying to reach difficult returns. Shimidzu won the sixth game to love, playing with extreme shrewdness and working" for placement shots and piling difficult returns on to Hawkes, thus testing the Australian's groundstroking powers to ' the limift Hawkes won the eighth game, 4-1, taking the last point on his service. Hawkes showed command of considerable court strategy and was quick to adopt his opponent's own tricks. Shimidzu, who was now stroking with extreme softness, sent high returns, forcing Hawkes to drive out, and the Japanese won the ninth game to love; and the tenth, 4-2. He thus won the set, 6-4, and the match, 6-4, 3-6, '2-6, 6-1. It seems clear that ■ steadiness played the greatest part in the Japanese victory.
