MAYOR TO REORGANISE

CARNIVAL BALANCE-SHEET THIS MONTH. Inquiries made this morning as to what had occurred when the Eastbourne Borough Council went into committee last evening resulted in a statement from the general manager (Mr. R. _B. Witty). ! He' said that the subjects introduced by Councillor Dawson in open council had been very fully discussed when the council went into committee, and decisions reached in -each case. It was decided to leave in the Major's hands the question of reorganisation of the staff, with power to act in connection therewith. Matters relating to incorrect minutes were also adjusted. These had relation to decisions arrived at with the contractors in connection with the purchase of the Muritai, and which Councillor Dawson was alleged to have wrongfully divulged, the subject having been dealt with in. committee. There had apparently been a general misunderstanding in regard to this and other matters recorded by the minute clerk. - - , "In regard to the carnival, 1' said Mr. ' Witty, "it can be stated that the bal-ance-sheet will be prepared, and- pub lished this month. I intend to call a meeting of the Carnival Executive Oommittea within a week or so to submit to them the position of the accounts, and I expect to have the matter cleaned up. us stated, to the general satisfaction of all concerned." The council had given instructions that extra assistance be secured to aid in""the preparation of the balance-sheet, towards the cost of which the Mayor had made a substantial donation The Plunket Society had received tnei-oO promised it but there were still several accounts unpaid. However, there was sufficient money in hand to meet them. Referring to the money which had been stolen from the safe in the borough offices, Mr. Witty said that the sum • taken amounted to £51 Us 6d, but there were no promissory notes included except certain wages memos for cash, which had been paid out,where seamen and others had been "paid off. The matter was # in the hands of the police, but so far. they had not reached a solution of the mystery.
