A NAPIER REQUEST
TO BE GRADING PORT
FOR DAIRY PRODUCE.
This morning~a deputation waited on the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Nosworthy) with a request that Napier should be made a grading port for dairy produce. The deputation comprised members of the Napier Chamber nf Commerce, Napier Harbour Board, and farming interests, and was accompanied by Sir George Hunter, Messrs. G M'Kay, and L. M'llvride, M.P.'s.
The departmental view of the matter was stated by Dr. C. J.. Reakes, the Director-General ; who pointed out that there were grading ports in other parts oi the Dominion, and if more were placed i- the same category, it would mean that Home boats would be forced to spend longer time-in loading on the New Zealand coast. The question of reduced freights was at present under discussion, but there was no likelihood of anything being done in that direction if another port was to be made- a loading port. Another matter of importance was that it was essential to keep butter in the hold at an even temperature. , If a hqld was to be opened frequently it would not be possible to achieve this purpose, and the produce would deteriorate:
Members of the deputation said that if Napier was made a grading port, produce would be able to save railage to Wellington.
The Minister replied that the question of reducing railway freights on butter and _ cheese was at present under consideration. He wished to disabuse the minds of the deputation of any idea that tne Government or the Department was not out to help producers in any particular part of the Dominion. The Government wished to help the Hawkes Bay producers as well as anybody else. He had to bear the steamer freight question in mind, and from that point of view had to consider the interests of the Dominion as a whole. He was quite open to reason, but was not going to do anything unless he could see that he was justified in his action. He would not do anything until he saw what was happening in connection with overseas freights, reduced railway freights and the Dairy Control Bill. S ' *
