CANTERBURY MARKETS

ICI TELEGKAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHURCH, 7th August. With Auckland merchants not propared to increase prices and -with Canterbury merchants unable to secure a margin unless such is forthcoming, and on top of it all growers supremely confident that prices are bound to rise, there is not a great deal doing in the potato market. Auckland inquiries are numerous enough, but .the £10 per ton, f.0.b., South Island, that local merchants are asking for whites is not meeting with a ready response. Some business has been done at this figure, and consignments will go forward on the Kurow, sailing on Thursday. Merchants are holding in Lyttelton anything up to 10,000* sacks, including seed, but the bulk of these are held for a 10s better price, and unless Auckland offers improve few of them will go north immediately. The' Kurow is a fairly full ship with wheat, chaff, etc., and it is estimated that the potato consignment will not exceed 5000 sacks. Such a light cargo as this after the preceding fortnight's limited shipments may result in the Wingatui leaving on Saturday or Monday, increasing her allotment.

The fowl wheat market has been brisker, a good deal of business having taken place at from 4s 10s to 4s lid, f.o.b. There seems to bo little milling wheat in farmers' hands, and probably the best of the fowl wheat will bo gristed. The better weather of tho post week has improved next season's wheat prospects.

Oats are lifeless, and values to farmers do not exceed 2s 6d to 2s 7d per bushel.

Cocksfoot maintains a firm tone. Standard has sold at up to 8 5-Bd.
