PARAMOUNT AND ARTCRAFT.

A picture showing Saturday's celebrations at the opening of the Otira ".unnel is included on to-day's programmes it the Paramount and Artcraft Theatres. In the star dramatic feature Tom Mix takes a firm hold of his audience, and 6\veep6 it through a whirl of action and romance. This Fox picture, " For Big Stakes," tells of Arizona, plots and adventure, of deeds worth doing, of one man in particular and of the girl he loves. The personal work of Mix throughout the photoplay is up to his highest level. There are many strikingly forceful points in the progress of the story, but that which impresses itself most strongly on the imagination is the fine direction shown in the handling ot a prairie fire. Rarely has a fire scene been so well done. Tom Mix does some remarkable shooting, some skilful rope throwing, and riding of tha finest sort. The appeal cf the story is almost universal. There is something in the picture to attract everyone. The second feature stars John Gilbert in " Calvert's Valley," a story by Margaret Prescott Montague, in which the elements of mystery, adventure, and romance are said to be skilfully blended. Special musical programmes are a feature at both theatres.
