PARAMOUNT AND ARTCRAFT.
Last evening, at the Paramount and Artcraft Theatres, Tom Mix took a firm hold on his audience, and swept it through a constant whirl of action and romance. This Fox picture, " For Big Stakes," tells of Arizona, plots and adventure, of deeds worth doing, of one man in particular and of the girl he loves. Tho personal work of Mix throughout the photoplay is up to his highest level. . There are many strikingly forceful points in the progress of the story, but that which impresses itself most strongly on the imagination is the fine direction shown in the handling of a prairie fire. Rarely has a fire scene been so well done. Tom Mix does some remarkable shooting, some skilful rope ■throwing, and riding-of the finest sort. The appeal of the story, is almost universal. There is something, in the picturo to attract everyone. The second feature stars John Gilbert in " Calvert'3 Valley," a story by Margaret Preseott Montague, in which the elements of mystery, adventure, and ro-, mance are said to be skilfully blended." Special' musical programmes are a feature at both theatres.
