BUFFETED AT SEA
LA MARSEILLAISE FROM NEW YORK.
During the last ten days shipping in the vicinity of the New Zealand coast has been experiencing exceptionally heavy weather, and the French steimer ii Marseillaise, which arrived at Wellington late yesterday afternoon from New Orleans and New York, reported encountering a severe eoutherly ga l e when off the East Cape toward the end of last weeic. The vessel experienced very heavy seas on Saturday evening which accounted for the breaking down of the telemotor steering gear, and started fiome ot the plates in the vessel's side. The damage to the steering gear occurred at midnight, but after a few hours' work temporary repairs were effected which, enabled the 6tearner to continue her voyage. She made port without further incident. La Marseillaise, which is making her first visit to-Wellington, is a'steamer of 7.569 tons, gross register, and, was built at Rouen in 1921. She is owned by the Compaisnie de Navigation Mixte; "Marseilles, and has a. 6mall general cargo for Wellington. . The 6teamer is to be repaired here, and will proceed, in about a week's time, to Australian ports to complete discharge of cargo.
