STEVE DONOGHUE

Steven Donoghue, who has just created a record by winning the Derby for the third time in succession, is a Lancashire Irishman with intimate connections with Wamngton (writes "S," in tho "Manchester Guardian"). He was born to be a, champion jockey, for while others have to spend many trying hours in reducing weight he is spared those trials. His normal weight is about 7st alb, and as a good horse always carries a heavier load than that he never has to refuse a mount because of superfluous weight. His third successive Derby puts the crown on a long- list of remarkable performances, and in his flat are scores of pictures rocordin" his many successes. One of the most notable is a composite picture made up of several paintings, each of which depicts Donoghuo riding The Tetrarch in one or other of the amazing series of unbroken victories recorded by th« spotted grey as a two-year-old. Nearly every day from April to October, Donoghue is up at 6 o'clock and practising on some course, while every day he rides in five or six races. His onlyquiet hours are following his breakfast, It is a strenuous life, but it is a wellpaid one, and every year lie will earn sums which make a Prime Minister's salary look paltry.
