ONAKAKA IRON
SMELTING TO BE RESUMED.
Steady progress is reported from Onakaka, Collinirwood District, in the work for the utilisation of the iron-ore deposits of the 'Onakaka Steel and Iron Company. A long wharf is being built out from the foreshore near the works into Golden Bay, and out of 1210 feet— the length of the wharf when completed —practically three-quarters is ready. The wharf, will carry two lines of rails', and will be available for local produce as well as for the company's needs. There will be a depth of about 9 feet at low tide, and at high tide ample water for large steamers. The piles of the wharf are 'of- birch—the same material as that used with success in the Golden Bay Cement Co.'c wharf. It is hoped to recommence smelting the irori ore at the blast furnace in September, next. Considerable developments are takinpc place in the neighbourhood. Near Collingwood a company is establishing a cement,works, and opening up a mine of coal that is said to be of excellent coking quality.
