MAIN TRUNK DISASTER
INQUIRY OPENED.
The board appointed to inquire into the.recent disaster on the Main Trunk line at Ongarue commenced its sittings at the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, this afternoon. The "members of the Commission are: Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. (chairman). Mr. J. Marchbanks, C.E., Engineer'of the Wellington Harbour Board, and Mr. J. P. Maxwell, C.E., formerly General Manager of the New Zealand Railways.
. Mr. H. H. Sterling, .solicitor to the Railway Department, appeared on- behalf of that branch of the Public Service. In opening the case,- Mr. Sterling remarked .that .the. accident, he believed, was without precedent in the history'of the .railways of- New Zealand. It was' proposed to call certain evidence on behalf of the Department'ill order that the board might fully, understand-all the matters, which would be brought under their notice, the Department to assist the board to'the utmost of its power in conducting the investigation. On behalf of the General Manager and the Depart, ment, he took that opportunity of expressing their sympathy with the .bereaved and. with, those-who had been injured. (Proceeding.)
