WELLINGTON C.C. V. NGAIO C.C.

The Wellington Chess League's senior and junior matches were continued at Ngaio on Saturday evening, when the Wellington Chess Club's senior B team and junior team were both successful against the suburban club. Mr. F. J. Brooker (president) opened the proceedings by extending a cordial welcome to the. visitors. He referred to the high traditions associated with these interclub contests,, and trusted that the town players .would enjoy the evening they 1 were spending '.'up amongst the hills." .(Applause.) Mr. G. Wigham (captain) happily returned thanks, and at a later stage he voiced the appreciation of the visitors of the very enjoyable evening provided, and paid a tribute to the valued assistance of the ladies (Mesdames E. Hicks and Brooker) who dispensed refreshments. At board 1, Mr. j' Lindsay, .the local champion, played the King Lopez opening. Mr. Wigham, who replied with the Berlin defence, gained 3 centre pawn in the mid-game. All Mr. Lindsay's ingenious. efforts to equalise were unavailing, and he had to resign a. most interesting struggle as he was unable to stop the queening of a pawn after all the pieces were changed off. A draw was agreed to in a very open t and finely-played game at board 2, where Mr. G. A. Jones (Ngaio) utilised the Philidor defence. At board 3 Mr. H. Godtschalk (W.C.C.) gained a knight for a pawn with his counter-attack, this advantage enabling him to score from the local president. At board 4 Mr. Craven (W-C.C.) won a rook for 3 pawns. Continuing to force matters, he obtained Mr. Topp's resignation, shortly afteri wards. Mr. E. S. Taylor was a pawn up at board 5 when the railway timetable compelled a halt. He agreed to a draw, as' the result of the match was no longer in question.. The score of Saturday's play is as follows: , Wellington C.C.
