THREE PESTS OF THE LAND.

"There are three evils in connection ■with the land," declared Mr. K. fcj. Williams (Bay of Plenty) yesterday, "tho speculator, the blackberry, and rabbit." While he did not agree generally with Government interference, he believed that in this instance the Government should take action against the speculator,- because .the working of the land was too important to the Dominion to,trifle with. He suggested that the Government pass an Act compelling the purchaser of land to take the transfer on condition that if he sold within five years he must: satisfy the local Land Board that the sale was due to justifiable circumstances, and not because of speculation. As for the blackberry, unless a determined effort was made to cope with this menace" to production, 'it would cost hundreds of thousands to clear.it. The task seemed essentially one for the. chemist, and he hoped that chemical research would be encouraged by the offer of a bonus for a blackberry eradicate.
