In the National Assembly, notice has been given of several motions for the July session, advocating retaliatory measures against the Dominions and colonies. As regards the Crown colonies, a Madras member is moving that steps be taken to impress upon the British Colonial Office that if Indians are denied the light of British citizenship and equality of treatment with white settlers, the Indian Government will be compelled to retaliate and suspend further emigration of assisted labour to any British colony whatsoever
The same member is also moving for the release of Ghandi and other political prisoners, and for the removal of their disqualification, so that they can stand for the Legislature*.
Another member's motion is more sweeping still. As retaliatory measures, he wants the Government to legislate that the conditions of entry for colonials 'to India shall be the same as the conditions Indians are subjected to in the parts of the Empire from which the colonials come, and that the conditions of domicile and naturalisation shall be simi tarty _ arranged. He also seeks the prohibition of colonials in any official position in Indin, the absolute prohibition of the admission to Indian harbours of ships owned by companies registered in the colonies or ships manned by colonials, and finally a Jfvy of double Customs duties on all imports from other parts of the Empire where restrictions of any kind are imposed against Indians.
The newspapers ridicule these motions as they are likely to do more harm than good, by creating i bad impression throughout the Empire; but it is not ireable that Indian resentment is growm<* about the treatment of Indians abroad" particularly in Kenya. . '
