VARIOUS QUESTIONS CONSIDERED

The Council of Education resumed its sitting to-day, Mr. John Caughley, Director of Education, in the chair.

Mr. T. U. Wells (Auckland) moved: — "That it be a recommendation to the Department that it retain teachers in aided schools as at present." The Director of Education explained what hail been done by the Department with respect to the work of the correspondence branch, and he suggested the addition of the words "where special provision for teaching is provided." This was agreed to, and the motion, as .amended, was agreed to. Mr. J. R. Kirk (Gisborne) moved: — "That the Minister of Education be advised to provide travelling allowances for pupils attending secondary schools."— Agreed to.

Mr. J. H. Howell moved:—"That the Minister of Education be asked to take steps k> amend the constitution of the Council of Education, so that it may contain equal numbers of representatives of each of the branches of th e service, namely, university, secondary, technical, and primary, and that these representatives formthe majority of the council." The motion was negatived by 14 votes
