CROWN LESSEES

IMPROVEMENT OF TENURE.

The recent renewal of Crowns leases was . discussed at the annual meeting of. the Otago and Southland Sheepowners' Union, and a resolution was passed congratulating tho Hon. D. IF. l.Tiithrie, formerly Minister, of Lands, on his efforts to improve the conditions of tenure of Crown lessees. The resolution Was aa follows :—•

"That this meeting expresses its appreciation of the efforts made by the Hon. D, H. Outline to improve the conditions of tenure of Crown leaseholders, arir' respectfully urges the necessity of the privilege of extension being granted to holders of leases of endowment lands. The meeting wishes ( to express its regret at the indisposition from which Mr. Guthrio is at present sufferings and trusts that he may shortly be restored to health."

The meeting expressed the opinion that the greater security of tenure afforded was regarded as being of- verygreat importance. Holders of: leases would he encouraged to improve their properties to a much greater extent, and the resultant increase of, production would be beneficial to the Crown, the leaseholders, and tb« community generally.
