WELLINGTON SUCCESSFUL IN
TOURNEY
PERFORMANCES REVIEWED.
The annual tournament' belween the Christchui'ch and Wellington Training Colleges was concluded on Saturday, when a tennis match resulted in a win for Wellington.. The series of tournament contests were interesting and enjoyable, a high standard of performance and play being maintained throughout. Wellington won four of the six contests which took place during Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The programme commenced with a swimming contest in the Tepid Baths. It resulted in a win for Wellington by 60 points to 22. The successful team owed much to the fine performances of Veitch and Miss Wilkie. Miss Bradley, of Christchnrch, was a notable, contributor to the strength of the visiting team. In the debating contest, the speakers for both sides displayed outstanding merit. The decision of the judge was in favour oJ" Wellincton (Miss Grono and Messrs. Martin-Smith, and B. Thomas) by 72 points to 66. Miss Owen was a prominent speaker for the visitors. " The Bugby match resulted ia a win for Wellington by 8 points to 3. The local team's backs displayed concerted and well-directed action, and the visiting forwards (notably Shrimpton, Okey, and Withell) played well. The hockey and basketball matches contested by ladies' teams were both won by Christchurch, the scpres being: Hockey 5-3, Basketball 4-2. The play in both games was very proficient, the combination good, and tho results well deserved
A ball, held in the College Gymnasium Hall on Friday (.Veiling, was the big social function held in connection with the tournament. The event was an unqaulified success. The hall, was tastefully decorated for the occasion with ribbons, bunting, and greenery. The colours and mascots of both colleges were appropriately displayed.
On Saturday morning the tennis contest was held at' the University courts. The weather was fine, and the matches (singles and doubles) proved of much interest to the spectators. Fine displays were given by Garner (Wellington) and Mi,ss Partridge (Christchurch). Results of tennis matches were as follow:—
Men's Singles.—Paul (W.) lost to Robinson (C), 6-5, 6-2. Garner (W.) beat Scott (C), 6-4, 4-6, 6-5. Thwaites (W.) lost to Wells ■ (CJ), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Hay (W.) beat Robbins (C), 6-2, 6-1.
Men's Doubles.—Paul and Garner (W.) beat Robinson and Scott (C), 6-2, 6-3. Thwaites and Hay (W.j beat Wells and Robbins (C), 6-0, 6-3.
Ladies' Singles.—Miss Sheppard (W.) lost to Miss Partridge (C), 9-2. ' Miss Nutting (W.) beat Miss Jefcoate (C), 9-4. Miss Astle IW.) beat Miss Owen (C), 9-3. Miss Lenz (W.) beat Miss Reid (C.),-9-3. ,
Ladies' Doubles.—Misses Sheppard and Nutting (W.) lost to Misses Partridge and Jefcoate (C), 9-7. Misses Astle and Lenz (W.) iVat Misses Lloyd and Reid (C), 9-1.
Combined Doubles.—Paul and Miss Sheppard (W.) lost to Robinson and Miss Partridge (C), 6-3, 6-5. Garner and Miss Nutting (W.) beat Scott and Miss Jefcoate (C), 4-6, .6-2, 6-4. Thwaites and Miss Astle (W.) beat Wells and Miss Lloyd (C), 6-3, 6-5. Hay and Miss Lenz (W.) beat Bobbins' and Miss Reid (C), G-3, 6-1. ; ■ . •■ ...'■ The contest was won by Wellington by 11 matches, 19 sets, and 161 games, to 5 matches, 10 sets, and 118 games.
Tho Christchurch representatives left for the South by the Mararoa on Saturday night. They were given an enthusiastic farewell. Before leaving they spoke in praise of the hospitality extended to them during their stay in Wellington. The students and staff of Wellington Training College desire to express their appreciation of the assistance given by those people who kindly provided billets for some %f the visiting representatives.
