GILBY'S COLLEGE WIN SENIOE

ROSEBOWL.

The Wellington Ladies' Basketball Association is to be congratulated upon the marked success attending its first annual six-a-side tournament held on .Monday. The following teams competed:—Training College, 3 senior; Y.W.C.A., 2.senior, 1 junior; Banks' College, 1 senior, 2 junior; Technical College, . 1 junior; Gilby's College, 1 senior, 1 junior; Berhampore, 1 senior, 1 junior; Wesley, 1 senior, 1 junior-; Kaianga, 1 senior; Government Printing Office, 1 senior; Wesley, Hutt, 1 junior; Hataitai, 1 junior; Knox, 1 junior; St. David's, 1 senior— a total of 132 players. Keen competition and the utmost enthusiasm marked, all the games. The tournament commenced punctually at 9 a.m. on the Clyde Quay School Grounds, and when at 11 a.m. heavy rain fell, play was transferred to the Harbour Board's Taranaki street sheds. Owing to excellent organisation this change did not ipterfere with the success of the day. The total time lost in the transfer was only thirty minutes. The semi-finals and finals were played in the afternoon.- In the senior division Gilby's College team were left to play Training College A for the final. This match was probably-one of the fastest and finest exhibitions of the game played in Wellington. Both teams contain some of the leading players in the association, and the final result, Gilby's 3, Training College 0, was a surprise. In the junior division, Technical College had to play Wesley, Hutt, for the final. Both teams had played very consistently during the day, and the match was hard fought. The final score, Technical 4, Wesley, Hutt, 3, is a fair indication of the merit of the teams.

On the conclusion of the finals a trial match was played for the purpose of selecting the representative team. Public interest in this sport is growing, and at. Clyde Quay grounds a large number of spectators assembled before the heavy rain drove them away. In the afternoon despite the inclement weather there was a fair attendance of spectators. In the evening the Y.W.C.A. entertained all the players at their cjub rooms in Herbert-street, and a very pleasant evening rounded off a euccessful day.
