THE BETTER WAY

ANATOLE'FRANCE'S ADVICE.

PARIS,'3rd June.

The conference of Socialists and Communists participated in the unveiling of the «tatue of Jean Jaures, who was assassinated in Paris on 31st July,_ 1914, Anatole France sent a message, in the course of which he* said : "We used to be told this war was to be the last to take placs. Now they tell us to prepare for a new-war, saying we shall have it in twenty years, or ten years,' possibly sooner, or immediately if we leave the Ruhr, which' would supply Germany with munitions. Has not our policy done everything possible to hasten a new war? Firm, pacific action would be well worth .while. Resumption of commerce with our neighbour would have enriched France more than the claims enforced by armed strength, which has proved ao costly."
