RAIN SPOILS HOLIDAY

EMPIRE VETERANS ENTERTAINED INVESTITURE AT AUCKLAND GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Heavy showers which become more frequent as the day advanced interfered considerably with outdoor fixtures today. A military review in the Domain by Lord Jellicoe was somewhat curtailed, and a Boy Scouts' rally was abandoned, but the races were held. Lord and "Lady jellicoe attended the annual luncheon given to the King's Empire veterans by the Auckland Patriotic Association and Returned Soldiers' Association, at which the Mayor presided. His Excellency said he thought that the King's Empire veterans would agree that if future 'generations carried on in the spirit that had been shown by the veterans, and in the spirit that had been shown by the men in the late war, the Dominion and Empire would stand on a sure.foundation. If in the troubles that confronted New Zealand (and other countries), and which he hoped were nearly over, that spirit were carried into the lives of the people, New Zealand would have a great future. It was no ase giving in when things were beginning to get difficult, and he did not believe that New Zealanders were the people to so give in. Sir Harry Lauder said he believed that the saviour of the world was the consolidation of the great British Empire. If the world knew and realised that the British stood, solid for everything that was good, kind, and noble in humanity, there would be no one who would dare to attack them. ...
