HIGH COMMISSIONER'S ADVICES.
The Department of Agriculture has received th following cablegram, dated 26th May, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London :—
, Meat.—lmprovement in market continues. Demand for lamb is good, and prices -firmer.^ Mutton in better request. | The position is improved by the shortage caused by an accident to steamer from River Plate, carrying 42,000 quarters of chilled beef. During the last two days, sales of chilled beef have been made- at higher rates than prices quoted below. N.Z. mutton: North Island, 57-641b ; 7|d to 8d j 65.721b, 7id to 7^d; 73-801b; 6d' to 6id. Eweß: . lightweight, s^d; heavyweight, 4Jd. N.Z. Lamb: Canterbury, 29-361b and>37-421b, lid; 43.501b, 10id; second class, 10id; North Island, ordinary, 10^d; North Island second class 9|d. N.Z. beef: Fores, about 2Jd; hinds about 4|d. Chilled beef-: Fores, 3|d; hinds, 7|d. BUTTER AND CHEESE. Butter.—Fair demand for finest, but market generally remains slow. Official quotations are:—New Zealand (salted): Finest, 26th May, 140s to 142s per cwt (Is 3d to Is 3|d per lb) ; exceptional, 144s per cwt (Is 3£d per lb). 18th May, I 140s to 144s per cwt (Is 3d to Is 3^d per lb); other qualities, 26th May, 134b to 136s per cwt (Is 2|d to Is 2^d per Ifi). Unsalted: Finest, 26th May, 143s , to 146s per cwt (Is 3£d to Is 3j|d per lb); 18th May, 146s to 150s per cwt (Is 3£d to Is 4d per lb). Argentine: 26th May, 116s to 124s per cwt (Is OAd to Is ljjd per lb); 18th May, 120s to 132s per cwt (Is o|d to Is 2^d per lb). Australian: Salted, finesV'26th May, 134s to 136s per cwt .(Is 2J[d to Is 2£d per ' lb); 18th May, 134s to 138s per cwt (Is | 2Jd to Is 2|d per lb); unsalted, 26th I May, 136s to 138s per cwt (Is 2£d to Is. 2Jd per lb); 18th May, 136s to 140s per cwt (Is 2£d to Is 3d per lb); 12th May, 138s to 142s per cwt (Is 2|d to Is 3id); other qualities, 26th May, 112s to 126s per cwt (Is to Is l|d per lb). Danish: 26th May, 152s to 154s per cwt (Is 4sd to Is 4id per lb); 18th May, 154s to 156s per cwt (Is 4£d to Is 4|d per lb).
Cheese.—Market slow. Official quotations are: English—Finest farmers' (small supply), 26th May, 108s-112 s per cwt. (ll^d-ls per lb); fine, 90s-102s per cwt (9fd-lld per lb). Canadian—26th May, coloured 84s-88s per cwt (9d-9^d per lb); exceptional, 90s per cwt (9|d per lb); 18th May, coloured 86sj92s per cwt (9id-9|d per lb). New Zealand—2oth May, coloured 84s-86s per cwt (9d-9^d per lb), white 84s-85s per cwt (9d-9id per lb); 18th May, coloured 88s-90s per cwt (9id-9?d per lb), white 88s-90s per cwt (9£d-9|d per lb). Australian—26th May, coloured 78s-82s per cwt (B|d-Bfd per lb), white 78s-82s per cwt (Bid-B|d per lb. ■ ■
Hemp.—Manila market quiet and prices irregular. "J" grade in dock sold at £32 per ton, while June-August shipments brought same price later this week. New Zealand market ■ inactive, values nominal and unchanged. Wool.—Bradford, market quiet. Tendency easier, but quotations unchanged. Fruit.—Pakeha shipment almost cleared, prices unchanged. A." few cases of -Delicious apples weTe sold for 20s each. ' Market fairly bare, though heavy arrivals of Australian fruit are to hand, but not yet discharged.- 'Average prices for Australian, apples are '2s' to 3s per case lower than New Zealand rates.
