EAST AND WEST

SOMETHING NEW IN EXHIBITIONS. The "East and West" Exhibition, which opens on Monday nest, in the Town Hall, "promises to be a novelty so far a3 Wellington is concerned. Similar exhibitions have been held in the Old Country, and have been very popular. One held last year in the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington, on a large scale, was visited by thousands of people, and found employment for hundreds of zealous workers. The preparations for the Wellington venture have been in hand for some months, and have engaged the attention of a small army of helpers in the city and suburbs. The interior of the Town Hall will be transformed into a panoramic representation of tho life of many lands. Tableaux and pageants will be staged at intervals, a party -of Maori* girls will give poi dances, a band of Chinese musicians will perform on three evenings during the week, and both still and moving pictures will be shown in the lecture-room.

The object of the exhibition is a praiseworthy one. It is intended to give the visitor a world-outlook. In an easy and pleasant way it will create interest in some of the questions which face the world to-day; by confronting us with a series of pictures and a collection of exhibits it will instruct us almost without our knowing it; by bringing people into contact with brave and adventurous souls who have taken their lives in their hands in order to spread the blessings of Christendom, it will inspire them. The average person knows little of the things which "East and West" will bring before him in such ah interesting way, and he probably has not the time to sit down and study them; but two or three visits to this exhibition ought to do much in the way of kindling an interest in a fascinating subject. It seems more than likely that if the work of Christian missions were brought before the public in this way a little' oftener there would be much less apathy towards this work than at present is the case. **
