Mr. F. W. Downs has been appointed president of the Chamber of Commerce as a representative of the Civic League on the Citizens' War Memorial Committee; ' . .

It was decided '"that the league accepts Mr; Watt's' resignation with, regret, and tenders to him its best thanks for his past services as an officer." The secretary will receive nominations for the office of president, and the election will be taken at a meeting to be held later.on.

Mr. Graves Aickin, one of Auckland's best-known figures, died at his "residence, Park road, on Wednesday, at tho age of '82 years. Born in County Antrim, Ireland, he chose chemistry as a profession, and after a period in San Francisco arrived at Auckland in 1863.. For twelve years he was a chemist in Auckland and at the Thames until hs established his well-known business in Queen street in 1875. He had an active public life, being at various times chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, and of various other public bodies.

Mr. G. W. Gillespie, who has resigned from the staff-of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., after seven years' service received a presentation from the assembled staff at Film House this morning. Valedictory remarks were made -by Mr. H. Y. Cameron, the general manager, on behalf of the director*, and also by Mr. T. M. Valois and Mr, W. Hughes. Mr. Gillespie was presented by the staff with a handsome solid gold fountain pen and pencil, and also a beautifu! suede pocket wallet.- Mr. Gillespie, who controlled the exhibitions and publicity side of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, has been appointed general manager for New Zealand for the First National Film .Exchange,
