MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL'

The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough.' Council was held last evening, under the ■ chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather). ■ The following'"were, also present:—Councillor H. W. Shortt, 0. Hull-Brown, H. M. Jones, E. A. Dawson, C. Bowden, H. J. Levy, and CJI-A. Marquis. ' ' ' " * The Wellington Hospital Board notified that the Eastbourne contribution for the current year amounted to £429 3s Id, as against £360 for last year. ■ The Wellington Discharged Prisoners'' Aid Society asked for a donation towards its work. The Mayor stated that ha considered the matter should be arranged by the Government out of the Consolidated Fund, and should not be dependent upon casual subscription. The letter was Teceived. . . ... An application for subdivision of land on Muritai road by Mr. J. Orchiston was referred to the General Purposes~Comniittee with power to act. The consulting engineer for the Hutt Power Board wrote asking for the borough's requirements in regard to street, lighting. The price would be £3 10s for each 100 candle-power light, and not less than 10 lights per mile could be allowed, nor less than, a-total of 25 lights.,. The matter was referred to the General Purposes Committee with instructions to bring, down a report. Mr. G. P. Sievers made application for a renewal of the subsidy of £85 per annum on the 'bus: service, the present subsidy expiring at the end of .the present month. He stated that he was negotiating with the present owners of the buses, and .if. a ■ purchase was-arranged would run a horse-drawn, service to 'a time-table approved by the council. The matter was refered to the General »Purposes Committee to arrange: It was also pointed out that negotiations were in progress for a motor service, but the expense of such an undertaking-was the greatest obstacla. The question .of subsidy was finally left over, pending a report from the committee. The Eastbourne Rugby Football Club wrote making an offer for two sections in Karamu street, used at one time as a shingle pit, . the club to arrange for filling-up to be done. The, land was required or the erection of a gymnasium. The matter was dealt with in committee. The general manager's, report stated that general maintenance work had been carried out in various parts of the borough. A storm which lasted from the 4th to 7th inst. had caused a considerable I amount of work, though no serious damlagehad resulted." On the 6th inst. the position looked very serious- for residents in the neighbourhood of Karajna street, but, owing to . the energy of Messrs. Wiblin and Johnston, the danger was averted. All six tennis court* were available for use. Street lamps and carbide boxes-had been repaired, but it seemed_ impossible to get satisfaction with the existing service.- The coal depot showed receipts totalling £74 8s 6d, tha expenditure being £44 18s 3d. • The General Purposes Committee r» ported that a guard rail and kerbing were required opposite the new infant school to prevent the young children from running directly on to the road. Th« committee also suggested that a public meeting should b& called in connection with a proposal to! erect a soldiers' memorial in the borough. The council wai also recommended to expedite the pro liminary details of the water scheme, am . ■urged) to treat the question as urgent The report was .adopted.
