WAKEFIELD PARK

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l wish to strongly protest against the use in your columns, in connection principally with sports fixtures, of the term "Duppa Street Park" when referring to the sports .ground the right name of which is 'Wakefield Park." "Duppa Street Park" was the term applied in the past to the disused and neglected sports ■ground at the head of the street of that name, and which was at one time known as VSt. Pat's Ground." When that ground fell into disuse on the formation of the new playing grounds further on down towards the Parade, Island Bay, the term "Duppa Street Park" became applied to the new grounds on account, principally, of the location of the new grounds being described to inquirers and players as being ,near the Duppa street tram stop. The name "Wakefield Park" was, however, . given to the' new grounds to, I understand, perpetuate the memory of the founder of Wellington, and I am sure it is not wished that this name should'be forgotten.

Could you, Sir,_ when referring to the Park in connection with .football fixtures and other matters, see that the correct name is used, and also issue a short appeal in your paper to sports bodies and citizens generally to use the name "Wakefield Park," otherwise the term will die out and be forgotten. Apart from., being the correct name of the Park, it is a more pleasing designation than the unbeautiful and ugly-sounding term of "Duppa Street."—l am, etc., K.K. 24th May.
