ARGENTINE REPUBLIC

TO-DAY'S ANNIVERSARY.

Ths Argentine Republic is to-day celebrating the anniversary of its independence. The political and historical significance* of the event, in its relation to South America, said the Consul-General of the Republic (Mr. Humberto Bidono) to a, "Post" representative to-day, was without doubt ignored by those who had not followed closely the evolution of that nation. The foundation of the freedom, equality, and brotherhood of all its citizens was laid by the revolution of May, 1810, and to-day the dogma of the revolution, proclaimed by Mariano Moreno, was a- glorious reality. The high conceptions of national life held by the founders had been carried out by the Argentine people. From a storm of polibical passions and a grasping- after person interests a strong feeling arose and took possession of a handful of Argentine heroes, and to the world the birth of a new nation was proclaimed. -The progress ol the Republic had shown that it was clothed with European culture and with American environs. "That height, reached by the wise direction of exemplary institutions of government by seers and patriots," said the Consul, "marks in the destiny of the. South American Continent the first stage of its marvellous progress, and by having efficiently defended its inviolable sovereignly, the Argentine has com© into prominence in international relationships. Over tho plains of this country, where all races meet, where all languages arc spoken, an<J where all religions are professed, floats the blue and white flag under whose folds is to be found a kindly home for tlw> cppressed of the world. It is with great pleasure that I would say to ,tho people of this Dominion, in justice to an historical fact, that England was the first of the European nations to recognise our independence.'"
