WELLINGTON HOSPITAL

MEETING OF NEW BOARD,

The first meeting of the recently-elect-ed Hospital Board was held this afternoon, the members present being:— Mesars. W. Apiffeton, J. W. Butler, D. Campbell, F. Castle. C. H. Chapman, W. Cole, the Eev. Dr. J. K. Elliott, A. R. Hornblow, C. M. Luke, A. J. M'Curdy, G. Petherick, C. B. Robinson, E. Vine, the Rev. H. Van Staveren, C. A. Williamson, E. Windley, and Mra. M'Vicar.

The various i committees of the board were appointed.

The Finance, Property, and Policy Committee of the late board reported that at a meeting held on the 23rd ultimo, it was resolved by a majority of the members present that the board advertise for an acting medical superintendent, to be paid at the rate of £800 per annum (resident) during the absence on leave of Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson, M.C., Medical Superintendent.

A letter was read from the Medical Superintendent, dated 19th ultimo, inwhich he expressed the opinion that the hospital could be satisfactorily administered and conducted in his absence without appointing a locum-tenens, provided! certain arrangements, which he indicated, were made. If a locum-tenene wa6 considered necessary, it was primarily that he might be on the spot to control all departments. That immediately raked a difficulty over accommodation. He thought that Dr. Ewen, Medical Registrar, could attend to the ordinary routine work, as he ha/1 been seven months in the hospital, and afterwards acted as medical superintendent, at Timaru Hospital. The only problem was the aoute and urgent surgical work. If the honorary surgeon on duty each weeK" would be prepared to attend hospital when requested for urgent cases, this difficulty would be solved. Dp. W. S. Robertson, physio-therapeutij^ would attend to fracture cases.

Mr. G. Shirteliffe wrote stating that as he was a director of a company that had been doing business with the hospital management he felt compelled to resign his recent appointment ac a member of the board. He thanked the electors for honouring him with their confidence, and was sorry he was unaware ol tFe position when he consented to offer his services as a member of the board.

(Proceeding.)
