TRAM ROUTES

TO WESTERN DISTRICTS r

WHAT KELBURN WANTS.

Residents of Karori and Northland ax* anxiously awaiting the time when they will be able to enjoy quick transit tc and from the city, and in view of the Kalburn cable tram purchase proposal having been decisively, defeated by the ratepayers, endeavour iis shortly to be made by supporters of the Raroa road route to induce the City Council to proceed with this extension, which has already been authorised and only requires the necessary money to be raised to allow of the work being started: The Kelburn Ratepayers' Association, .however, is in favour of trams going across Kelburn and up Sydney street; also,'consequently, it seems probable that tho "battle of the routes/ so far as the \ western districts are concerned, will be started afresh, entailing still further dslay before Karori and Northland residents will have their desires met.

The subject was discussed at this week's meeting of the association, when the following resolutions were passed: —

"That the Kelburn Ratepayers' Association recommends that the council proceed immediately to construct a central tram route across The Terrace and Kelburn from the vicinity of Manners street; also the Sydney street route, and that a main arterial road be constructed via Boulcott street under The Terrace, via Kelburn Park, Kelburn parade, and Glasgow street."

"That the association, having decided in favour of a central tramway route and arterial road to Northland and Karon, in conjunction with the Sydney street route, now proposes to request the co-eperation of all other ratepayers' associations,' together with the Civio League, to further the scheme."

•It was decided to write to Councillor W. H. Bennett thanking him for the valuable assistance rendered by him to the ratepayers in connection with the proposal for purchasing the Kelburn cable car. The meeting was unanimously of opinion that his services in ottainihg the engineer's report greatly assisted the ratepayers in arriving at their majority decision against the proposal. Advocates of the Raroa road route contend that forces should be united to secure the execution of this undertaking on the ground that any other proposal put to the ratepayers will be in danger of rejection, and that it is better, therofore, to have,an already-authorised work put in hand rather than obtain nothing at all, which would be the case of the Raroa road proposal were it abandoned and any alternative proposals were sub. sequeritly turned down.
