CAPPING DAY

TO Ml IDITOIt,

Sir, —Permit me to say a few words anent the capping day celebrations, which, according to the cußtom of the University, take place in a few days' time. Well, Sir, my experience in observing those celebrities demonstrating in this city a year ago is quite enough to make one blush for shame witnessing such an idiotic display. However that may be, the University is an institution supported by the public purse, and the public have an^ educated taste enough to expect something which would be reflective of a higher note of refinement and culture and which ought to elevate the status of education in the popular mind. The public, I am sure, are quite responsive to a true and well-regulated degree of mirth; but to prostitute the higher functions of our educative faculties to the depravity of the hoodlum is something 'to protest against. I trust, Sir, those responsible lor law and order in this city will see to it that the University will not be encouraged as a nursery for such stunts as we witnessed a year ago.—l am, etc., MODERATE. 10th May.
