KELBURN NORMAL SCHOOL

REPORT OF COMMITTEE.

The report of the voluntary committee ■ of the Kelburn Normal School, to be presented to to-night's annual meeting, states that during the past year a bazaar was held, and £117 17s 9d profit ! wa» realised. The levelling of the school ; grounds was completed, at a cost of £458 6s 6d, the estimated cost being £300. Mr. Paterson, chairman of the committee, made the surveys for the work. The infants' ground was also levelled at a cost of £146 4b 4d, Mr. Sievers supervising the contract. Thanks were accorded to the Education Board for erecting a fence. Mr. Dawson, accountant to the board, had on many occasions given valuable advice' and ! assistance to the secretary, for which • the committee offer their thanks. Miss , Maitland, head' teacher, was granted j twelve months' leavjs, as from Ist Feb- ! ruary, for the purposes of visiting Ame- ' rica and Europe, to study their various methods of education. Miss Maitland ;| left New Zealand about 18th December f last, and is expected to. arrive back , I some time in January, 1924. During ■ I Miss Maitland's ■ absence, Mr. Blake, : f acting-headmaster, organised a concert, I which yielded a profit oi over £18. i For several months past Mr. Methven ! has been endeavouring to foster an interest in music among the school staff. The committee is of opinion that such I a movement is worth encouraging, and consequently donated a sum of £6 7s 6d j for instruments and music. The committee is grateful to Mr. Perry, librarian. Newtown Library, for his abie and careful selection of books for the Normal School, and his enthusiastic administration of "free library for schools policy." The balance-sheet Nshows that the re- 1 ceipts totalled £832 11s sd, and the expenditure £814 2s. leaving a balance ' to credit of £18 9s sd, as well as concert proceeds, £15 8s" 6d. I
