SUGAR SHORTAGE

RETAILERS' SERIOUS POSITION.

(UNITI9 TRESS ASSOCIATION.—COrTJtiaHT.S

UOS»AtUH.-»gW ZEALAND CABI.B ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 28th April. Following a reduction in the estimates of the Cuban sugar crop" to 3,670,000 tons, compared with a turnout of 4,102,000 tons last season, there has been wild purchasing of Cuban, and prices have risen greatly. The advance is likely to continue, as supplies during the next few months, ore expected to be below requirements, and the^ position is unlikely t 0 be relieved until late in the autumn, when the European beet crops come along. The advance has baen serious for many retailers, who refrained from buy. ing some time before.the introduction of the Budget in the hope that the Chancellor woul.d reduce the duty. The reduction failed to materialise, and since the Budget refiners have raised prices 2a 9d per cwt. As a result, small retailers have been compelled to sell below cost to meet the competition of the multiple shops. Now prices have been raised all round—loaf sugar to B£d per lb, and granulated to 7£d. Jam manufacturers are also likely to advance prices. .
