SATURDAY'S GAMES

ORIENTAL FAIL AT PARK

WELLINGTON BEAT 'VARSITY. Berhampore 12 Oriental 5 Petone 21 Selwyn 12 Marist ...... 11 Old Boys % .... 3 Wellington „ 16 'Varaity ' 3 .Athletic 35 Hutt 0 Poneke, a bye. Saturday was comparatively an offday in senior championship football, the outstanding teams in the. competition so far not being pitted against one another. Berhampore played Oriental at Athletic Park, and won decisively by 12 points to 5, though the Oriental forwards had all the best of the second spell. It was a poor game. In the other games there were evidences of the improvements which have been made by; those teams which were lowest on the championship ladder last season. The play of those teams, Wellington, Old Boys, and Selwyn, bears out the opin-! ion that this season's senior competition will be very interesting. Wellington, were rewarded after many seasons of game struggle against adversity by a meritorious • victory over 'Varsity at Kelburn Park by 16 to 3. Wellington are much stronger thig year than last, and their early initial win may well be followed by others. Marist accounted for Old Boys after a good game at Duppa street, in which the loaers showed themselves worthy opponents of the'leading team. Petone defeated Sel•\v'yn in a heavy scoring game at Petone, while Athletic had a day out at Hutt, running over the local te»m in the second sell by 35 to nil. Poneke enjoyed a day off through a bye.

With two series, of matches completed, the chompionship position is as follows :—Marist, Athletic, and P«tone, each 4 points; Berhampore, Wellington, Poneke, and Old Boys, each 2; Oriental, 'Varsity, Selwyn,/and Hutt, each 0. Following are the details of Saturday's matches:—
