CIVIL SERVANT'S LAPSE
The theft, as a servant of the New Zealand Government, of £8, the property of the Treasury Department, resulted in tho appearance before Mr. B. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, of a. young man named Allan Bruce Saunders. Chief Detective Kemp prosoouted, and the aooused was represented by Mr. P. J. O'Regan. According to the Chief-De-tective, the accused was' a married man residing in Wellington, and for the past seventeen years had been employed in the Tourist Department. In August, 1921, while he was acting-accountant, he received a travelling expenses vouoher from Captain Thomas Roberts, master of the G.&.&. Tawera 1 on Lake Te Anau. This voucher was received by the aocused on 20th August, 1921, and two. days later he drew a cheque on his imgreat aocount for £8 to forward on to Captain Eoberts. The cheque was cashed by the aooused in Wellington at the Bank of New Zealand on the day in whioh it wu drawn, and the accused did not pay Oaptain Roberts his expenses until 7th November, 1922. At the conclusion of the case for the prosecution, the acoused, ■who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
