BETTING ON HORSE RACES
CAUSES YOUTH TO STEAL,
(II TILIGRAFH.—fRIIS AIIOCfATIJX.) AUCKLAND, 26th April. "I use the money to bet on horseraces. One day I lost as much as £30. When I had a win I would pay the money back."—So ran a passage in a statement made by a young' clerk employed in the Union Steam Ship Company's office, when charged with stealing sums totalling £457, the property of the company. Accused, aged 19, who appeared in the Police Court to-day, entered a plea of guilty. It was stated that early in 1921 he commenced to steal sums of money. When freight dues were paid he failed to' account for them, in the proper way, but endeavoured to balance each month by paying in money received that month. The cash handled was insufficient to allow him to continue the system. He had made restitution of £15. The youth was committeed for sentence, and was granted bail,' one surety of £500. An order was made that his name must not be published.
