MEMORIAL CELEBRATIONS

FUNCTIONS IN VARIOUS PLACES.

(BY TILIaitAPI.—PRIIS AIIOCIATION.) GISBORNE, 26th April. Anzac Day was marked by Tieavy showers in the morningl and continuous heavy rain in the afternoon. The principal ceremony was the unveiling of the district war memorial, containing the names of five hundred and seventy-five men from the district, who had fallen. The ceremony was performed by Colonel Melville, who, in paying a tribute to the men of the district, said that in regard to its honours and awards, Poverty Bay men had the largest number in proportion to the men who went away. He paid special tribute to the Rev. Mr. Grant, who died on Gallipoli while attempting to rescue the wounded, and to Mr. W. G. Bremner, who, though over age, enlisted with his eldest. son. He had been, wounded, and returned, to send two other sons, .both of whom were killed. Appropriate speeches were delivered by Sir James Carroll, Mr. Lyenar, and M<r. K. S. Williams. Many wreaths were laid on the memorial. The ceremony of unveiling the granite obelisk on Kaiti Hill, erected hy the Gishome Sheepfarmera' Frozen Meat Company, was held in the; afternoon in heavy rain. The obelisk ,is erected in honour of employees who fought in the war. The unveiling was performed by Mr. C. A. Do Lautour, ex-chairman of directors of the company, and the speakers included the Mayor and Mr. W. D. Lysnar. j DARG-AVILLE, 26th April. Anzac Day celebrations were very successful. A large number o! returned soldiers, Territorials, Cadets, Friendly Societies members, and firemen attended a special service in the theatre, and were addressed by Rev. Patterson Campbell. In the early morning the returned soldiers assembled at the cemetery and erected a cross over the grave of the only returned soldier buried there. TAURANGA, 26th April. Anzac Day was fittingly observed yesterday by a largely-attended memorial service in the Town Hall, in which clergymen of all denominations took part. An address was delivered by Colonel Charters, C.M.G. Rain fell nearly all day, but held fine during the service.
