CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES

MR. WRIGHT AT BROOKLYN

In furtherance of his Mayoral election campaign, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., addressed a meeting in the Anglican Schoolroom, Brooklyn, last night. Mr. Matthew Thew presided.

Mr. Wright said that if he were elected this time he would on no account be a candidate two years hence, as he . held that four years was quite a sufficient length of time for one man to occupy the position of Mayor. Dealing with local matters, .he said that Vogeltown road had been completed to Adams street, and was a very fine job. The road was sufficiently wide to permit of tramway construction, and ultimately ! a tram line muet be laid down. When it was carried out it would prove a great boon to the Vogeltown residents, who had been denied tramway facilities' for so many years. He referred also to the park at Tanera crescent, the levelling of which would be completed in about ten days' time. No doubt the Reserves Committee would have the park covered with turf and grassed during the year. . In answer to questions, Mr. Wright said that a duplication of a portion of the line at the Brooklyn end was very essential, and although the matter had escaped attention, yet he intended to bring it before the Tramways Committee and ask that the work be carried out. In reference to the lack of conveniences at Central Park, he knew this was to be coneidered when the estimates were being framed. It was not correct that free passes on the trams were easily obtainable. As a matter of fact, the council was very conservative indeed about granting free passes, and even Plunket nurses and other social workers were compelled to purchase a special concession ticket. Ma-. Wright spoke on the lines of previous addresses, and was accorded a vote of thank* and confidence by acclamation.
